Makeup for women of Color

Sick of wasting money on foundations, concealers, and powders that just don't work with your skin? It's not always easy to find makeup that complements ethnic or exotic skin tones especially since the majority of the cosmetics industry produces makeup geared towards pink and orange undertones. Stop wasting time and money and find products that really work for you! This guide is an exploration of the brands and some of their lines that do the best job of matching yellow and brown undertones.
First Things First
You've probably gone through this before; you match a shade to your skin in the drugstore and once you get home to try it on, it looks either ashy, too pink, or simply the wrong shade. What gives? Follow these sure fire tips to make sure you don't get the wrong foundation.
Go to a department store or makeup store and have one of the saleswomen give you some help choosing a shade. They are often quite informed about the brand's variety of shades and can usually choose a color that matches your skin well. Or better yet, bring along a friend -- your buds will be brutally honest and won't pressure you into buying anything.
Try swiping on the foundation that you choose from apple of the cheek to the jaw line. Right next to that stripe, also apply foundation one shade higher and one shade lower. Yes, it will look silly, but it's worth it to find the right color.
Make sure you have a small compact or mirror with you and head outside to see how the makeup looks in natural light. This will give you a better idea of whether or not the color is correct and it will give you a quick idea of whether you have pink, blue, yellow, or brown undertones.
The correct shade will be the one that seems to disappear into your skin.
Also keep in mind that if you wear powder over the foundation you might need to retest a second time.
The Players: Foundation
What you are looking for is to find a brand that suits your budget and the right products from that brand to get the right effect on your skin. Look for oil-free foundations that provide medium to maximum coverage. If they have an SPF in them, all the better. Make sure if you have darker skin that you avoid any products that contain titanium dioxide as this ingredient can often make your skin look washed out and ashy. If you are pale, don't worry about it.

Now, what you've been waiting for: the options.

Bare Escentuals can provide your skin with a very lightweight matte finish with great coverage. However, it is very important to use sufficient moisturizer before using this product.
Amazing Cosmetics has a similar selection of mineral foundation that will give the same look, but
Black Opal
The True Color Creme Stick Foundation gives full coverage without looking caked on.
The line offers a good range of shades to suit yellow, red, and brown undertones.
Bobbi Brown
While Bobbi Brown does have great colors and a wonderful line of products, the foundation seems to be lacking and has received a large number of poor reviews, mainly due to the fact that it dries very quickly, making it hard to blend. Try applying it with a foundation brush and you may find this to be an excellent match for your skin.
Try the tinted moisturizer if you are looking for ultra-light coverage.
Chanel
Expensive, but worthwhile if you find a shade to match your skin.
Teint Fluide Universel and Double Perfection Fluide are the top picks for oily skin.
Era Face
If you are looking for light coverage that goes on nearly flawlessly, Era Face Foundation is a great product to try and will give you the closest thing to an airbrushing.
The spray application make take a few tries to master, but in the end it will give sheer, even coverage.
Era Face also offers a wide variety of foundation shades that are very well-suited to yellow undertones.
Fashion Fair
For years this company has been at the forefront of the cosmetics industry for focusing on makeup for women of color.
Their line has everyone covered and is particularly well know for their foundation, lipsticks, and eye shadows.
Iman
This entire line of products is praised by women of all shades, especially those with exotic skin tones, as it is formulated to match nearly every undertone.
Cream to Powder Foundation : Offers medium to full coverage.
Liquid Foundation : Give a soft matter glow with lightweight coverage.
The blushes from Iman are a great choice if you've ever struggled finding a color that doesn't look fake.
Iman also has a great makeup book that provides useful tips on application and choosing colors called The Beauty of Color.
Kevyn Aucoin
The line is overall very good and the foundations offer full coverage.
Try The Sensual Skin Enhancer either as a concealer or foundation depending on how much coverage you need and/or want.
Lancôme

The Color ID line is formulated to adjust to your skin tone, making it a top pick for foundation for everyone.
It gives your face a light, dewy glow that is not pasty or cakey.
Great for those looking for light to medium coverage with any red or yellow undertones. Not great at creating maximum coverage.
'L'Oreal
L'Oreal True Match is a foundation made to match your skin tone no matter what shade it is.
For the price, this is an excellent choice and is comparable to the Lancome product mentioned above.
MAC
Known for its high quality cosmetics, MAC has done a good job of representing women of all ethnic backgrounds with it's wide variety of foundation shades.
Studio Fix
Studio Finish Matte
Select SPF 15
Makeup For Ever
Try the Face and Body Foundation for sheer, but buildable coverage if you have yellow undertones.
The Mat Velvet Oil Free Foundation would be better for tan skin with brown or red undertones and oily skin.
NARS
The Oil Free Makeup offers a nice range of colors to suit most undertones and is non-drying but suitable for oily or combination skin.
Expect light to medium coverage.
Prescriptives
Prescriptives Virtual Skin is a nice lightweight foundation that does a good job of matching skin tones, but won't do the trick if you are looking for a heavy duty concealer style foundation.
Traceless, a tinted moisturizer, is also a great product for less coverage regardless of your skin tone.
Sacha
A decent line of foundations made in Trinidad and Tobago that are suited specifically for yellow and brown undertones, such as copper, bronze, tan, and caramel.
Probably best for those with slightly dry skin as the products contain natural oils.
Cream, cream to powder, and liquid options are all available.
Shiseido
The Makeup Powdery Foundation SPF 15 is well rated and comes in a wide range of shades. Plus, the fine milled pigment covers flaws without looking caked on. This is the choice for a natural amount of coverage.
You might also try the Luminizing Brush Powder, ideal for those with red undertones.
Sue Devitt
Try the Triple C-weed Whipped Foundation, a product that testers verify is worthwhile for how well it matches yellow and red skin tones.
It is one of the few products by Sue Devitt that have scored so highly across the board.
Trucco
Try Trucco foundations and concealers if you have yellow undertones.
They offer liquid, crème, and powder foundations.
Colors For All Moods

Colors usually aren't as difficult to work with or to find as the right foundation. Usually the most important thing -- particularly with very dark skin -- is to find high pigment shades of shadow, liner, and blush so that they actually show up. For basic information on color, please see the guides on Eye Shadow, Blush, and Lipstick, or check out the quick picks below.
L'Oreal HIP, the new line by L'Oreal Paris, boasts rich color in deep, magnetizing shades that are perfect for darker skin.
Revlon Colorstay 12 Hour Eye Shadow Quads are inexpensive but come in a few great palettes for nearly all skin tones.
Liquid Eyes by Maybelline would be great for someone with lighter skin.
MAC Eye Shadows are some of the best mid-range color options, offered bold colors that go on smooth and leave a lasting impression.

Measuring you head for lace Front

Helpful Hints for taking good measurements:
1.) Use a cloth measuring tape.
2.) Measure holding the tape snug, but not tight against the head.
3.) Keep tape flat against your head and do not allow kinks or twists to develop in the tape.
4.) Take measurements at least 3 times to be sure. Consistent measurements are an indication that you are measuring correctly.
5.) Braid, Wrap, or lay your hair how you plan to wear it
under the wig before measuring your head for your wig.

Down to the basics-

Measuring your head :

1) Measure your head Circumference with a tape measure around your hairline.
Circumference: This measures the distance around your head. Starting at the center of the front hairline, place the tape flat against your head, going just above the ear towards the back of the head, keeping the tape at the nape of your neck and go around to the opposite side of your head, just above the opposite ear and returning to the center of the front hairline. Circumference = _______ inches

2) Measure Front to Nape
Front to Nape: This measures the length of your head from the front to the nape of your neck. To determine where the nape of your neck is, tilt your head back and look up. Where your neck bends and may even develop a skin fold, is where your nape is. You want the bottom of the wig to sit right above this area so that when you do tilt your head back that far, your wig will not shift on your head. This area is often right at the occipital bone, but be sure to take the measurement with your neck bent down so that you are looking at your shoes. Starting at the front hairline, measure directly across the middle top of your head to the area that you have determined is your nape. Front to Nape = ____ inches.

3) Measure from Ear to Ear Across Forehead
Place tape at your temple, just in front of your ear, bring tape up towards the top of the head and go 1.5 inch behind the front hairline, down to the opposite temple in front of the opposite ear. Temple to Temple = _____ inches.

4) Measure from Ear to Ear Over Top of Head

Ear to Ear Across Top of Head: This measures your head for the top of the wig base. Place tape against your head at the top edge of your ear and go directly across the top of your head to the top edge of the opposite ear. Ear to Ear = _____ inches.

5) Measure from Temple to Temple Around the Back of Head
Temple to Temple Around the Back of the Head: Place tape against your head at the front edge of the hairline (sideburn area) in front of the ear, go around the head above the occipital bone to the opposite front edge of the hairline. Temple to Temple = _____ inches.

6) Measure the Nape of Your Neck

Nape: The measures the width of the hair at the nape of your neck. Place tape at the end of your hairline at the nape and measure across the width of the hair. If you want more room at the nape, you may want to consider adding a half inch to your nape measurement. Nape = _____ inches.

Lace Front

1. Don't let anyone pressure you!

If you feel uncomfortable with a vendor, go with your first mind. You normally can never go wrong. If you've ever been to a trade show or intend on going to one-it's a great idea if it's free. Don't go to any show that obligates you to buy a unit from them,

2. Be patient!

When I ordered my first wig, I was soo impatient. It was a stock unit and I did not take time with it . I still have the unit, but I made mistakes due to me wanting it soo bad and wanting to put it on right away without the time or proper tools need it. Relax-your beautiful without it anyways…:)

3. Read!

You have already taken the first step here by purchasing this information. Read up on different techniques, vendors, and decide if lace wigs are for you. It's a process of trial and error. If you like things to be perfect right away, then maybe this isn't for you. That is unless you have a professional apply it for you EVERY TIME. That can get quite expensive!

4. Order custom units when you can!

These normally turn out to be the units that you fall in love with because they are made to your specifications. Stock wigs are good also, but make sure you do good measurements. You don't want to get a wig that covers half of your lovely head!

5. Love it

Most lace front units can last from 6-months to more than a yr with everyday wear if you provide it with love and care. You go the salon and pay for your hairdo, you wrap it up and try to maintain the hair, don't you? Do the same with your wig!

6. Think about You!

What is your own personal style? Do you like curls, thick hair, straight hair? Chinese remy is really good for straight styles but do not hold curls well. Indian hair hold beautiful curls but does not hold straight styles well. Keep this in mind when ordering and choosing your density. Light density with a gradual fade to Medium is the most popular/natural. I happen to like thick full, "Diva" hair, so I choose Medium to heavy in regards to density. Light to light is a NO NO…..unless your going for that thin hair look. NOT! LOL.

7. French or Swiss

Swiss lace cap is more realistic and it is thinner. Swiss is good for realistic parts also. French is more durable. I have found that Swiss lace is not at all that fragile. I have Swiss and I tug and pull on my wig all the time. A lot of sites, recommend French for beginners, I was a beginner with Swiss and I did just fine. Especially with my heavy hands!

8. To Bleach or not to bleach??

BLEACH!! PLEASE! This is important if you want the hair to look as realistic as possible. The knots on the wig should always be bleached.

How to apply a lace front wig/unit.

In need of a new hair style in a hurry ? Ok, you have this lace front wig and your not sure what to do with it. Don't panic, I'll walk you through step by step.

Things You'll Need:

Step 1:
Clean your forehead area with soap and water to remove any oils etc. Next you want to take a cotton ball with alcohol on it and wipe from ear to ear around front hair line to further remove any oils. Once the alcohol dries apply your scalp protector which helps with adhesion.

Step2: Put your lace wig on and make sure the wig sets correctly around the hairline and is even on both sides of the ear.

Step3:Cut the front lace along the side of the forehead line right next to the hair line where you can see the hair line on the wig, start cutting from the bottom of one side to the center of the forehead line and repeat from the other side.

Step4:Take wig off and start applying bonding glue on the forehead skin where the lace front is to be attached. Before you put the wig back on, make sure the glue is completely dry.

Step5:Put wig on, make sure it sits properly on your head.

Step6:Press down lace part onto the bonding area from one side to the otherwith the back end of the comb.

STEP7: To remove lace front apply alcohol on a cotton ball and press and hold the cotton ball along the the hair line to break down the glue. or you can purchase glue remover .

As skin ages, it can become duller and less vibrant. Using an anti-aging facial brightener is a great way to even out skin tone and get it looking flawless and glowing once again. Incorporate a facial brightener into your daily skin care regimen and see an improvement in your complexion’s color and brightness. By fading other skin discolorations that you may be concerned about like age spots and freckles, a facial brightener can give you a more youthful radiant look.

Facial Brightener Can Cover Flaws

Although using a facial brightener cannot remove fine lines and wrinkles, they do an excellent job in covering and dramatically reducing their appearance thereby making fine lines and wrinkles virtually invisible. A facial brightener returns a youthful glow to skin by restoring a smooth appearance to skin’s surface and brightening skin’s color, allowing you to use less makeup.

Facial Brightener Delivers Results

By adding a facial brightener to your every day skin care routine, you may see results in as little as a few days. After cleansing skin, gently massage a facial brightener over the areas of the face that you want to brighten, wait until it absorbs into skin then apply your face moisturizer. It is important to remember if you are going to be in the sun for a long period after applying your facial brightener, then you should apply a face cream that contains a high SPF factor to protect skin against harmful UV rays.

What is Hyper pigmentation?

Hyper-pigmentation comes in many forms but can be prevented and treated.
Hyper-pigmentation is a general term used to describe any darkened area of the skin caused by an increased production of the skin pigment, melanin. Hyper-pigmentation can affect nearly all skin types, all ages, men and women. Typically, those with darker skin tones are more prone to hyper pigmentation issues as ethnic skin tones normally have more melanin. Often hyper pigmentation is only a cosmetic issue, but it can also be the result of an underlying medical condition which could require professional care.

Inside our skin are cells called melanocytes which produce the pigment melanin. Melanin is what gives our skin its color and more importantly protects our skin from the sun's UV radiation. When the skin is exposed to the sun, its natural defense is to create more melanin, causing an overall darkening or tanning. While tanning is considered natural and often associated with beauty, the side effect of excessive tanning is often not as pretty.
When the skin becomes damaged, either by too much sun, an external injury or by some internal cause, it can respond by creating excessive pigment and forming a pronounced dark spot or discoloration. These discolorations are referred to as hyper-pigmentation and can come in the form of a dark age spot, scars, or brown/red patches on the skin. Hyper-pigmentation can also be caused by many different medical illnesses such as Addisons and Cushings disease, Melasma, Linea Nigra, Tinea, Celiac Disease and more. For this reason, it is important that a doctor fully diagnose the individual before he/she attempts to treat just the cosmetic symptoms.

Hyper-pigmentation can often be successfully treated with the use of skin lightening creams. Many of these creams contain an ingredient called hydroquinone which is a chemical skin lightener that can be used in various concentrations ranging from 2%-10%. Over the counter hydroquinone creams are available in a maximum of 2% concentration.
For concentrations higher than 2%, a prescription is required. Many of these prescription strength products also combine the hydroquinone with Tretinoin, which helps to significantly increase cell turnover. Some individuals prefer not to use hydroquinone and instead opt for more natural skin lighteners that use proven ingredients like Kojic Acid or Arbutin. . In some cases, laser treatment may be also be effective.

The sun is the worst enemy of hyper pigmentation. Without proper sun protection, it is nearly impossible to expect successful treatment. Sunscreens and protective clothing go a long way in the treatment and prevention of most types of hyper pigmentation.
